Interior Designer Charmaine Benjamin-Werth Translates Sugar Into A Sophisticated Ambiance At Sugar Ridge Antigua

Once devoted to cane plantations, the island of Antigua is now one of the Caribbean’s premiere luxury tourism destinations. The newest member of its splendid lineup of resorts is the elegant Sugar Ridge, named after the nearby sugar-cane-covered hills.

Antigua, West Indies (Vocus/PRWEB ) November 7, 2009 -- Once devoted to cane plantations, the island of Antigua is now one of the Caribbean’s premiere luxury tourism destinations. The newest member of its splendid lineup of resorts is the elegant Sugar Ridge, named after the nearby sugar-cane-covered hills. Inside and out, Sugar Ridge offers a sophisticated setting that takes its cues from this sweet commodity. Charged with the task of translating sugar into a polished design strategy was d-Studio’s Charmaine Benjamin-Werth, who was raised on Antigua and embodies its grace and beauty with her own brand of elegant charm.

“My focus while creating the design brief was simple: it was all about sugar—in every possible incarnation,” explains Benjamin-Werth. “Colors like caramel, vanilla, molasses, green and orange mixed with an array of tantalizing textures recalling sugar cubes, sugar cane stalk, citrus, honeycombs and crystals to help me create spaces that are warm and welcoming. I also wanted to suggest the pleasurable sensations evoked by sugar and take full advantage of our Caribbean heritage. Meanwhile, the clean, contemporary edge of the design kept it fresh, whilst the rustic touches helped keep it grounded.”

Benjamin-Werth reached around the globe—and around the corner—to source the details that produced the stylish ambiance of Sugar Ridge. Travertine tiles from Turkey, wood flooring from Guyana and custom-made Indonesian teakwood furniture blends with the distinctive photographs taken by local artists Jennifer Meranto and Yensa Werth. Her effortless touch can be seen and felt in every corner of the resort, from the public spaces, the guest rooms, Carmichael’s Restaurant and the Sugar Club to the Aveda Spa, the hotel uniforms, the landscaping and the architectural finishes.

For over 20 years, Benjamin-Werth has dedicated her career to designing visionary spaces exuding function, elegance and innovation. A professionaly-accredited interior designer, her true skill lies in a unique ability to meet the needs of her clients, while respecting and understanding the visions of the architect, engineer, and the accountant. Currently based in Antigua, she has a comprehensive and diverse portfolio having managed design projects for hotels, restaurants, ambassadors, heads of state, minsters of government, banks, medical providers, private residences and retail outlets.

Benjamin-Werth and her architectural designer husband Kerry Werth, own Antigua’s d-Studio, a venture that has allowed her the flexibility to pursue her own highly individualistic approach to interior design. At d-Studio, the husband and wife team work in tandem to draw upon the region's uniqueness and diversity to offer an inspiring contemporary reinterpretation of Caribbean design. Her modernist style is evident in much of her work, which leans towards warm uplifting undertones characteristic of the Caribbean.
